Alice Sutton is the designer behind the label Edition. Edition is another Canberra based label available at Assemblage Project. I asked Alice about her designing practice.
When did you develop your interest in fashion?
I have loved fashion and dressing ever since I was little. I used to dress up in my Mum's clothes when I was 2 years old and then from there would make clothes for my Barbie's and then it just continued to having my label!
How do you approach designing?
I approach designing by thinking about how I can create a piece of clothing that is sustainable and still really exciting. I work with trial and error by experimenting how certain shapes work on the body and then how I can translate that into a wearable piece of clothing.
Do you consider sustainability is important in your design process?
Sustainability play a very important role in my design process. Right from the start I think about my material choice and the most sustainable options, I then work with my pattern making to create zero waste or minimal waste patterns. The time involved with the entire process means that EDITION is a Slow Fashion label where the whole process is considered and thought about will small production runs.
Where do you find inspiration?
I find inspiration in many places. Locations that I love, my emotions and experiences and also in the materials themselves. I love working with a fabric and seeing how it inspires me.
What is the best advice you have received as a designer?
Get a flexible part time job! Haha I think you need balance as a designer or you are always thinking about the label. It is good to get out and experience lots of different things.
How do you describe your style?
I think the EDITION style is relaxed, elegant and simple. Billowing jersey and beautiful silhouettes.
What is it like working for yourself and who is your dream client?
I love working for myself and the flexibility it allows. It also lets me create my own rules for designing and making. My dream clients would be Florence from Florence and the Machine and Sarah Blasko, I love their music and personal styles.
